Generally the possessive should be reserved for people and animals (Jack's coat; the horses' hooves) and sometimes objects which have an animate character (the earth's crust; the ship's wheel). It should be avoided for inanimate things (the rock's composition becomes the composition of the rock). Sometimes making the possessive noun into an adjective is acceptable (car tires; tree branches).
