Conjunctive adverbs (however, nevertheless, etc.) unlike conjuctions (and, but, or) that join principal clauses (complete sentences), conjuctive adverbs require a colon or semi-colon when they are between principal clauses: Bigger books are not better; however, they are heavier. Within a sentence, however, conjunctive adverbs are set off with commas.
